I thought I would update you on our progress this year.
As I mentioned in a previous email, I am a first year softball coach and am determined to run Skills Based Practices. Although it is a difficult task, the effort is well worth the price.
At all of our batting practices we run 2 to 3 different skills and have the kids rotate through them all. At the end we have a quick scrimmage using the Louisville Slugger Pitching Machine in place of the pitcher.
I am still working on an effective defense Skills Based Practice. I run an infield drill by hitting grounders to all of my infielders having them “Make the out at first”. They all know that it takes a batter/runner just over 3 seconds to get safe at first so the goal is to get the ball to first in less than 3 seconds. I run an outfield drill by hitting balls to the outfield having them “stop the runner at second”. They know that it takes well under 6 seconds for a batter/runner to get to second. Knowing time restraints has improved our fielding ten-fold in the last month.
We lost our first 2 games, but after working hard finally won our first game last night (by 8 runs I might add). The team was clicking and knew where the play was and how long they had to make the play.
Thanks for your website and I will try to keep you updated as often as possible.
